Ok im putting windows on my new hdd and therefore need to know what files from steam do i copy over to save me re downloading them. And do i need to install HL? coz i hav no idea where it is lol.

I think all you need to do is drag your steam dir over and it should work.

There is an option with steam to backup files for each game, so you could do that for all your games, then reinstall steam on the new pc and import the backups.

aye cheers lads, that looks about right...backups to about 4gigs so thats spot on. Now the fact i dont have 4 gigs free on my hdd wont b a problem....

yeah!!!
I always make sure that windows is on it's own partition. That way I only need to delete that partition to install windows.

i do that on my server but cba to do it on my gaming machine... really should get a better hdd for the gamer actually, not even sure if its a 7200rpm drive or not but its only 40gb... all you really need for a gamer tho tbh... i guess 60 would be nice now for some of the bigger games but everything else just gets stored on the server...
