Lo guys.

Well i've just got a new AMD Duron 1600Mhz CPU. cost £30 total (inc delivery) and i was going to use it for the server i'm going to build. Then i realised its overclocking potential. now i'm going to use the super hot running palomino XP2100+ CPU underclocked and undervolted to cool it down instead (i could get away using 500Mhz to run this server let alone 1Ghz+)

So far i've overclocked this beauty of a processor by 600Mhz, from 1600 to 2213.5 (according to CPU-z, 2208 according to bios) and i havn't actually hit its limits yet. I stoped at 2.2Ghz because i wanted to test it was stable and let it 'burn in' a bit befor i moved on. so far its stable, i did superPi to 32m places while playing half a dozen MP3's at the same time for about an hour and it stayed up fine and has been on non stop for over 30 hours without crashing and has done several reboots (which i initiated ) and come back up at the same speed and settings no problems.

However, i seem to be limited to 12x multiplier? I was wondering if anyone might know of a way to amend this problem? For those of you who don;t know about this processor AMD have 'discontinued' tbred B core CPU's. the Tbred B's were some of the best overclocking CPU's ever especially certain xp1700+. The new Duron CPU's however use the tbred B technology but with only 64k of L2 cache memory enabled on the chip rather than 256 like tbred B's, thus the core name applebred. It's similarities are so close its even known that by linking one of the bridges at the top of the CPU the full 256k L2 cache can (on what appears to be over 50% of the CPU's) be re-enabled and used sucessfully. I'm looking to do this mod possibly.

At the moment the CPU is spitting out 1m place Super Pi times to a little over 1 min with only 64k L2 (which limits it) but if i enable the full 256k L2 i should get something like 10% 15% performance increase and beat the 1min mark .

if anyone has any help, tips or tricks or see's anything online that i might be able to use to get this CPU running better please say. for the record the stepping of this cpu is MIXIB 0342.

nah, i've beem looking into it, AMD have recently been putting 'Superlocked' methods on their chips. this has been reported on the new Barton core proc's and many are reporting they've started doing it to applebreds to if thats the case the L2 mod won't work either meaning the CPU will stay at duron spec cache nm, i reckon i've got a bit morei can go on the FSB yet so i'll probably have a go raising it to 2300Mhz tonight

We'll i've had a play and its running at 2.3Ghz as i type this. It's completed a SuperPi 1m place run in 58 seconds (oh how i wish i could use the full cache) but seems to be running ok. Clock speed is 192*12 = 2304Mhz

I dont think i'll be able to get it much higher than this.... for the moment. reason being the CPU is only running at 1.6 V which is comfortably within the 10% leeway imposed on manufacturers by regulations (but for OCers theres nothing stopping them going for a full 1.9v as long as they got good cooling and they dont mind the potential risk to the cpu)

My problem is my RAM. I've maxed it out bar possibly a few Mhz, the RAM voltage is basically almost as high as it will go to keep it stable. I've been checking its temps and its not running hot, the ramchip is luke warm to touch (suicidal but i was curious) and when i finish doing up my case the extra cooling i provide to that area should keep it cool enough untill i get some pc3200 stuff to replace it after Xmas

Still gotta test for stability fully but seems ok. will keep you posted
