Does anyone know off the top of their head if you can use any old xbox 360 controller on your pc, or do you have to use some special one?
The reason why I'm asking is because for my masters (and a bit of fun) I am going to make an xbox live game using their new XNA Framework. I suggest anyone wanting to get into computer games development should check it out, it looks like a pretty damn decent package to get you going, plus it comes with starter kits to get you up and running really fast, and you can use the xbox 360 controller with it. I think I saw a starter kit somewhere the other day that was the whole mechwarrior 2 source and assets!!
Once the final release comes out, you will be able to publish your game and be able to let loads of people on the 360 to play it, tho I am not sure if it's through xbox live, or some other service (and if you would get money for it).
ohh, if anywone gets into this stuff and gets stuck, I'll be happy to help out. We should make a SFH game and try and get it release on xbox live. Any ideas anyone? I wouldnt do anything really crazy to start off with. I have always wanted to make a side scrolling shooter.

cheers chieff, any chance you could send me the drivers (there should be one on the cd)...I am at work, plugged the 360 controller into my pc and it downloaded the drivers, but my laptop is not online and i want it to work on that. Having trouble finding the drivers on the M$ site, downloaded a couple and they fail
I think a side scrolling shooter would be cool, I love metal slug so I would love to do that kind of thing - we could have clan members as end of level bosses
I'll need level design, and some art assests

im will get to work on it
have u pld alien hominid mojo... its a class side scroller on the xbox
i was also thinking of keeping to the cs formula of havin terrors vs cts... in this case the player is a ct sfh member...have say 4 diff character based on sfh members all with different strengths..
then havin the terrors as the enemy, and they have insect minoins etc and we gotta fight thro them to get back to normal size

sounds good, but it could be themed like Metal Slug, and have say 1 level where it's a rats map, and other stuff also...maybe a CT theme, maybe a SWG theme, Dawn of War, BF2...best do 1 level at a time (we can start with the Rats one), that way we have the ability to release add-on extra levels. an underling story would be nice, but maybe pointless and limiting.

I've installed the XNA tool kit but not had any real time to mess around with it.
I can't wait untill the Xbox360 part gets released (even if you need to pay $99 a year to get and use it), but until then PC development will be fun.
So far good points:
It's very much like devloping for the GBA.
Bad points:
You have to program in C#

I am going to join the Dev part, and will get a 360 when I have enough cash. I still don't know if you can release this stuff on xbox live, but I'm sure if the Dev community really like your game you can somehow get it published...and get 60% of all profit from xbox live sales (how awsome is that?)
As for the C# thing, I am still undecided if it's a good thing or not - i'd rather C/C++ but apparently (according to a programming head here) C# is like C(--) I am not sure if you can or can't dive into C or C++ using a #define C or something.

Cheiff, how much for a xbox 360? Anyone know the cheapest place to buy a new one from? (will probably need the good version rather than the crappy one)

You get the core system for 200£ on komplett, or the other one for 265 £.

MS will be doing a Dashboard update soon that will include a HomeBrew area on it for home made games. I'm guessing it will be released around the time XNA goes out of beta and includes the Xbox tools.
as far as I can see with C# it's what you get if you get MS to take Visual C++ and Java and mix them up.
Im sure I will get the hang of it quite quickly I just need to get some free time to have a look at it.
I am looking forward to getting some game development going again as it's been ages since I last did anything. (Would have been my GBA stuff).
