Right, what's this all about then. Every time I try to run Counterstrike: Source I get a popup window:

"Engine Error - failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer"

Followed by "hl2.exe - Application Error - The instruction at "0x2223961d" referenced memory at "0x0d84a1a0". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program."

It used to work fine (well, four months ago, the last time I played it.) Now it always quits out with this. Any ideas?

first thing to do is delete your clientregistry.blob file - fixes most steam errors (assuming this is one)

If not, then try deleting your hl2 cache files and redownloading them from scratch - tho this may be tough in baharain

also, as wom says, uninstall everything, delete any files that are left then install from scratch.

the errors mentions DX8, try deleting the blob file, but before deleting all your steam content i would try
uninstall graphics drivers, uninstall directx, reinstall graphics drivers, reinstall directx9.

Well, got it sorted. I installed the latest DirectX drivers and NVidia Quatro 3400 drivers last night, and now it loads perfectly again.

I did NOT want to reload Steam from scratch!

Thanks for the tips.
