Okay, is there any point to me getting a GMail account? I mean, I know it has a gig of space and blah blah blah, but I have a hotmail account and a Pop3 account and I already barely use the Hotmail one, so is there really any point in getting yet another email account to have to check that I will probably hardly ever use...
Or do you have a different opinion... is it the best thing since sliced pineapple? Will it automatically email people with long and witty messages without me doing anything? Should I drop what I'm doing and sign up without delay? Is it really exciting and exclusive, even though every other person I know has been offered one? Is there any chance that, if I don't sign up now, I won't be able to in the future anyway?
WHAT'S THE FLIPPIN' POINT?!!!
Opinions please.

Well, i use gmail and i havn't been all that impressed tbh.
Besides, i am half and half with a few conspiracy theorys out there atm. Like this: you can't delete emails on Gmail, you can only archive them. This means that if anyone ever sends you an email to Gmail it is there INDEFINATELY. Given that Google pride themselves in organiseing the worlds information, it worries me that they would be organiseing emails that people don;t want to be organised.
Its all very big brother imho.
I'm not handing out my gmail address anymore.

you can delete them cant you.
it just takes some effort.
i wouldnt bother getting one unless you need more space than the 250mb offered by hotmail.

I read somewhere on the bbc website that although you can delete them (with a little effort) they said that they can't guarantee that they will be deleted from their server...i.e you delete them and they just disappear from your account, but not from big G. What I really find quite freaky is the fact that you send invitations to all your friends, so they have a record of who knows who, and if every account is done like this then they are going to have a massive database with whom is affiliated with whom...that's kind of scary. We need to set-up a website that will send you an auto invite from a random account so that random people can sign up and are not really associated with you at all. That would really put a spanner in the works.

I got a hotmail account 5 years ago, but now it's not used anymore but MSN. Pop3 accounts are all you need.

Right, no one else convinced either then! I'll forget about that and carry on with my barely used Hotmail account and my sensible Pop account. Gmail schmeemail. Thanks all, especially for the cyber conspiracy info... more great material for my book.

actualy, gmail has free pop access, I just quote the mail I got from them:
google wrote:
Free POP access: Take your messages with you. Download them, read them
offline, access them using Outlook, your Blackberry or any other device that
supports POP |
|
|
and another thing :
google wrote:
- Better contacts management: Import your contacts from Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail,
Outlook, and others to Gmail in just a few clicks. Add phone numbers, notes and
more. Even use search to keep better track of it all.

yes but they still store all the info as said above...
dont matter if they offer pop3 i bet anything they save all the msgs that go thru em, which is why im happy i host my own... none of my msgs are stored.
they will import all your contacts :o how fookin scary is that. lol people who use Gmail are inviting them selves to be tracked in every online way.
every time you acccess Gmail your IP is logged to that account, so say you ever act nawty and download sumfin... FBI MI5 anyone.. all the need to do now is have the cooperation of gmail.. i mean how many millions use gmail? it's not free e-mail it's a world fookin database.

surely thats the same for every email provider though. I mean hotmail say they delete the messages but how long do they keep them in their servers for?
SO in fact it aint just Gmail that could do that (log ip's and such). All the major email hosting people could. Thats not a v happy thought for us with our hotmail.com's and yahoo, etc.
Basically what I am trying to say is.

Regardless of how you look at how google USE the email system they have, it is blatently obvious that they have the potential to be the most powerful provider of free information to anyone. That can either be a very good thing, or a very bad thing. You make up your minds which because when the sh*t hits the fan, the majority of which people think it is will win.
This is their self-confessed goal btw..........

tbh i think it is a major clamp down. think about it... 1 world wide company with a list of ips who can put a name to it instanly without involving ISP's.
sh*t they gonna be an FBI informant. now obviously with some laws there are info they cant give out, but think of the hastle it would save getting a court order against 1 company instead of against an ISP on the other side of the world?
and it then has a list of every associate, it's things like that for al qeuada n sh*t. they cant use pop3 :P
heh its all fun, and thats why if you eber do see an e-mail from my hotmail account i used to use the name on it is johnathon creek :P
but i'll stick to my own pop3 on my server so i know sh*t is gone
