basically, the smaller the size of the tracks that connect all the transistors (the 90 vs the 130) the less heat generated.

So an amd64 3400 at a 90mm core will make less heat then a amd 2000xp.

Surely...
The smaller the size, the more resistance, therefore more heat!

no because the smaller the process the less power is required to push data through and resistance increases over distance, if the pathways are shorter less resistance.

also there is less metal so less bits to heat up.

the less metal bit doesnt make sense. smaller current fuses have a thinner wire, so they become hotter more easily (with less current) and break earlier.

but it makes sense that the resistance will be less if it has a smaller distance to travel i guess.

i take it you are still specin your new PC - may i recommend that you go for a socket 939 board if you can afford it. It should last you longer as far as upgrades go.

from what ive seen -

skt 754 - A64 2800 up to A64 3500 (or 4000?)
skt 939 - A64 3400 up to FX55

Then again i might be talking sh*te. Hmm. Best check amd.com

yeah when I was looking at my amd64 the 939 mobos were very very expencive and the processors even more so.

So I went with the 754 Damn good motherboard and a damn good processor.
