Hey everybody.
Now, as some of you will know I am planning on upgrading soon. I have been looking to get an athlon 64 with all the bits. Now I am looking into case fans and cooling.
I don't have the time or money for water cooling but the case i am going to get has space for 7 fans (it says). But it doesn't come with any. Now, I would like to know if there is any need to get these extra fans?
Also, I have been looking at hard drive coolers and ram heat dissapators. As they don't cost much individually I was thinking about putting them in too. But I thought I would ask you guys first and you know alot more than I do about these things.
So advice wanted about the above things and noise ratio. and stuff. and junk.
Am plannign on getting 512 Ram, 120GB SATA HDD and if you need to know anymore then just ask!

Id aim to get 712 or 1024MB ram if you can afford it - itll help alot in any new games like doom or CSS. If you buy Corsair ram it comes with heat spreaders already on - their XMS DDR400 is VERY nice. As for fans id put in at least 2 at the front and 2 at the back both blowing air to the back ie across the board and out the exhausts at the back... what GFX card you gonna get? You can get 9800 pro's for about £120-£150 now!

Dunno about the grpahics card just yet.
I will buy that with Sept. pay packet. This lot will keep me giong for a while though. As for the newer games, I am sure they can wait a while. I have a 64MB geforce 2 hanging around and I think that is the minimum for doom 3.
Plus I have to start driving lessons some time soon. So it will have to be a balance of the bank account.
What about hdd coolers? Waste of time?

well to put my opinions in, defo get some fans. The thing to remember though is that twice the number of fans does not mean twice the noise so dont just settle for one and leave it there, get a couple. When it comes to fans, choice is yours, personally i prefere having low noise fans, they cost extra but the quality is definiatly there, however they usually run at low RPM due to this and so lack the ability to shift much air.
If your willing to get some decent fans i suggest getting some zalman or vantec fans from overclockers.co.uk - the zalmans are good because if you were to link them upto a fanbus you can run them at full speed when needed but throtle them back when theyre not, so best of both worlds.
as for coolers, well as harv said RAM coolers arn't really any use for cooling, only really any use for looking good and i spose protecting the chips from getting damaged, besides good ram usually has them on already. As for HDD's, if they need to have a cooler then they're not gonna last long anyway, seagates tend to be good for heat but how their SATA drive perform heat wise i dont know, if you have good ventalation in your case this shouldnt be much of a problem, i'd say spend the money on rounded or low profile cables instead so the air can move better in the case than coolers like that.
A good idea is also to get a good Heatsink, A64's have limited choice at the moment but be prepared to get a better cooler if they stock HS doesnt cool the chip well enough.
last thing, your case probably does have room for 7 fans, but how effective they will be with the case's inbuilt grills is another matter, the case grill's can cut over 60% of the airflow off so it might be an idea to look at cutting out the grills and getting a few decent grills in place instead.
which case u getting anyway?

i agree with everything jag said in particular the part about the zalman quiet fans - I have been using zalman stuff for a couple of years now and found them to be very good! Theres also www.quietpc.com for zalman stuff...

right here is what I think,
Don't bother with HDD fans, unless your going to be running a file server, which your not.
Get a number of case fans, it helps keep every thing cool, and don't worry about the fan that comes with the AMD64, I still with the stock fan and the temp of my cpu is about 41 degrees.
but yeah get as much ram as you can, windows likes lots and doom3 like even more, and don't skimp out on the gfx card or you will notice every little differance when it comes to games.

I've seen a program running on Edd's machine (it was the spell checker we made at uni) and one of the unix programs devloped a major memory leak when it was ported and we rack up over 3Gig of Vram on top of the gig of ram he had in the machine :)

Edd didn't port it over him self it was a apple program, and I think edd is a tester not a coder bt I could be wrong.
but in apples defence it was not a program that got used alot (sed or awk I think it was)

ok everybody,
Have bought Athlon 64, with 512 RAM and 120 gig seagate SATA hdd.
Case and all for just under 340 pounds.
Which I thought was good. Scary spending all that money in one go but there you go. Hopefully load up the maps a little bit quicker now.
Thought I would let you know. Thanks for the help you guys (bought some fans, not the ones you guys recommended because that was extra shipping and packaging thus pushing up the price!) But I will try to buy a graphics crad next month. All fun.

I recomend the Radeon 9800pro 128MB dude. I follow ATi implicently, - believe me its the best ATi card for the money.
Its a beast of a card at a budget price of around £150.
Also, don't go for the 9800pro 256MB since it is a VERY marginal increase of performance for gaming for alot more money.
I'll leave it to someone else that can give you advice for an NVidia card. I will never knock NVidia because they also produce beasts, but i don't know enough about them to advise...

Nvidia budget card? erm probably either 5600 or 5700 would be good, 5800 also has good stats but for the cost im not sure if its worth it. However nvidia are bringing out there 6th series and all indications are the cards are awe inspiring, they beat their predecesors by twice the performance etc, 5900 gets 5000 3Dmark 2003, the 6900 gets 11000 and it isnt just driver hacks, real world testing has backed these results up and aparently they look real sweet in games and run soooo smooth, so ideally a 6th series would be the best option, but theyre not really avalible atm so i'd probs say go with harvs recomendation.
