OMG – I'm just doing some research on Investment Banking, and I so joined the wrong industry! If you want to make money, check this out:
"Investment Bankers receive the highest starting salary of any graduate-level job in the United Kingdom[4] - whilst the average starting salary for graduates in the top 100 AGR blue-chip firms is £23,000[5] (and closer to £15,500 for all graduates according to Prospects.co.uk), investment banking graduates can enjoy a starting salary of £35,000 - on top of this, a £5,000 "golden handshake" is typical, with an end-of-year bonus up to a further £30,000 for some 'front office' divisions. This puts a year-one salary for potentially a 21/22 year old at £70,000 - 4.5 times the average for a graduate. Whilst the £35,000 base salary only rises by four figures annually, bonuses for the best performers rises exponentially, being many multiples the size of their base salary, so that many in Corporate Finance, Trading and Sales can expect six-figure pay packages in their 3rd year, when promoted to Associate level.
Graduates with a Bachelors or Masters degree begin as Analysts on around £35,000 base salary, those with PhDs or MBAs but no experience begin as Senior Analysts on around £45,000 and those with MBAs and prior experience begin as Associates on around £60,000 (and six-figures when including a bonus). At the upper end, most Managing Directors expect a seven-figure salary."
Not too shabby!

I got a friend who is a graduate invesment banker. He's on 50k....he works from 7am till 11pm, is expected to work on weekends and doesnt really have much time to do much else. the way i look at it is this:
if you get 50k a year, but you work an average day of say 16 hours (normal being 8 for £23k), you are effectively working twice as hard, thus getting twice the pay. (and thats not including weekends!!!) all things being equal, i'd rather work 8 hours a day for £25k than 16 hours for £50k. If I wanted the extra money (and taxes) I'd get a second job for the other 8 hours.
As of time of this writing, it makes perfect sence to me, however I really badly need to sleep, so I may have written total sh*t.

i see ur point mojo
its true u gotta work alot harder in one of those accounting jobs.... thats why if u have brains like me or mojo u go into the games industry,
with it bringing in more money than holywood u are minted if u get lead programmer or artist, with the likes of sony if u become lead artist on a project your lookin around £120,000 a year, smaller comps u lookin at about £50,000 -£60,000 for a lead job.
eg. lecturers mate just made and sold a mobile phone game for sommit like half a million, 2 of them made it... thats a nice £250,000 for 3 months work, and its not even a special game, its the average price or sommit

I know ALOT of people who are in the mobile games industry (the group know as iPlay the biggest mobile phone games group going) and mobile phone games are not doing that well any more. alot of the groups are laying people off and cutting down on the number of games they are making.
As for the games industry, get ready to put you life on hold when you start making a game because you will find ALOT of your hours will be spent working on it. I've seen the number of hours the testers alone put into games.

we a 7 man team (static entertainment we called) and as im like lead artist i gotta design front end, gui, characters, levels, weapons, not only draw but make in 3d and animate...
so hense why my social life gone to sh*t recently,... also while we doin this, uni where nice enuff to give us 2 more projects, one is make a mobile game for black bull mobile games company, where a student will get to make his game and go on placement, game will then sold on the market, and also they given us a 3d project in for tuesday.....
well guess this is wot the industry will be like,
Cucking Funts!

IT's not just the games industry but the software dev industry in general. I've put in some crazy hours at sky so far and it's looking like it's going to get worse before it gets better.

I was up late on a mass coding session. I got a programming test for a company called Denki, they make games for sky boxes and sh*t. They also make mobile phone and gameboy games (but their bread and butter is sky box or IDTV). They have a very high turnover of games as they are more or less like making yee old commodor 64 games and NES games. They say that they don't like their people working overtime, and 9-5 is all they do. Was the same deal at Kuju Brighton so it really depends on where you work. Massive 3d games usually take more man hours to make, so if you are making them then yeah, you will probably have to put in a lot of overtime towards the end of a milestone. However, making big games is very risky and costs a lot of money which is why developers go bust all the time.
As for the mobile phone games industry, I think you'll find that Glu are bigger then iplay. Glu are thriving and screaming out for new programmers all the time, compared to iplay who are circling the drain and having to make cutbacks. I really don't think you can backup your comment of "mobile phone games are not doing that well any more". I think the mobile phone game industry is still big bussiness, and will only get bigger.
Also, [D]esert made a rather nice point about the games industry: leads get a % of profit bonus, usually something like 1%, but still, that can turn out to be a nice week £250k bonus per game (depending on success)like rockstar dude getting a cool £5M or so for gta san an

the mobile phone industry is doin well, the company we working wif in uni is brand new( black bull), and they have got some new engine called "talarus" which gives u equivilent of ps1 gfx on smart phones (eg nokia n-gage)
only prob with mobile games (and i brought this up in my interview and think it why they loved me :P) is the fact most people buy the game, pay there £2.50 or a fiver and play it once or twice, and then never touch it again. with the exception on snakes which was a massive cult game in belf.
so the main problem wif mobile gaming is keeping the users interested. SO with mobile phones gettin so high spec, (4 megal pix cameras, 4 gb mem etc, gps, blue tooth) developers can implement alot of external factors into the games like downloadable content etc which increases the play life of the game...
so with these sort of advancements i too think that the mobile phone industry will get stronger... as companies will soon be able to produce games of a very high standard and can stop rippin off amiga etc.
w00t ps1 gfx on my mobile...

well the idea im doin for this company, is a 3rd person rpg (kinda like pokemon on gameboy).
The story line behind the game( this the quick version) is that a mad scientist has created a mini biodome in his lab in order to observe creatures and how they evolve and interact with other creatures.
after several weeks of watching the creatures he gets bored so decides to release alot of evil creatures into the dome.
you take on the role of a creature in the dome (there are 3 main species) and you leave your village and go explore the biodome etc etc
the main usp(unique selling points) for my game is the external factors that i mentioned b4 a few posts back like gps and bluetooth,
also the game works like a tamigatchi (how ever the f**k u spell it) and the user will get a msg every day giving the progress of your creature( you can leave it to wander the dome while u aint playing) also alot of the features are aimed at children who like pokemon digimon etc as tryin to create a skool yard trend with the game.
if u wanna see the idea properly i can send u the pitch document i made in photoshop... dont think i can upload it to forums.. so msn me if u wanna see it
