Hey all,

Went to the dentist the other day for the first time in about 4 years. Turns out I need some fillings fixed and he recommends getting my two wisdom teeth on the left side pulled out, as they're both ruptured (even though they haven't ever caused me any pain or problems). Anyone had their wisdom teeth out – I don't know whether to do it now or not. Half the people I talk to (actually more than half) say don't bother, but the dentist says do it now before I get older and it gets more complicated. And to add to my dentistry fun, some have said I should get my Amalgams (50% mercury fillings) pulled out and replaced with white composites, but the dentist says no, they don't last as long and are harder to put it.

Any of you guys closet dentist experts or have any experience with any of this? I don't know what to do now, and my first fillings appointment is next Monday!

Wisdom teeth problems can have varying effects, some subtle and not always with teeth pain. I have impacted wisdom teeth (they can’t get through because they are stuck underneath other teeth) and when they move I get crazy headaches. Other problems are that if they do come out and there is not enough room for them, they will screw your teeth up and make em bunch up and give you that typical British smile. I have to get round to taking mine out, but it’s a horrible thing.

As for the 50% mercury fillings, personally I'd go for getting them taken out. If not purely for cosmetic reasons, mercury is poisonous (some might think storing poison in your body maybe a bad idea). Some people think that it causes a sh*t load of problems in later life, others think that they have been doing it for years and years and there are no problems or side effects (a bit like smoking). I guess it comes down to personal preference.

As for the wisdom teeth - the top set ones usually pop out really easily according to my dentist friends (I've had one of mine done and never felt a thing).

tbh mate, in my opinion - if the dentist recommends you get stuff done - then just go with it. Get the first lot of fillings done and then decide whether or not to use that dentist for the rest of the treatment (they might be sh*t).

I reckon its much better to get everything done in a short period, then its out of the way and you dont need to worry about it.

I reckon ive spent well over a week in total in the dentists chair in my lifetime. Trust me dude :)
