TBH matey...
How MUCH can FPS vary.. really???
You see things from the first person perspective... and thats all there is to it!? You can't change the concept of a FPS to make FPS a better genre of game.
In essence, FPS games havn't changed one tiny bit since its great-granddaddy 'Castle Wolfenstien' all those years back - simply because its a style of game that is fundamently flawed by having the inability to change its concept without moving away from being a FPS.
My advice to you is if you want something else out of FPS games, maybe you should stop buying FPS and go for a different genre of game to get your 'something new'?
In the mean time for me, Doom3 will roxxer my boxxer until the legend that is Gordon Freeman graces my PC once more!

I think your a bit wrong there, Deus Ex as a differant style of FPS, and so was Normality and realms of the haunting.
But doom 3 does rock thou.

I agree with harv on this one. All FPS's have exactly the same principle in game, you shot things in first person. Fair enough the aims and objectives are different (i.e. Deus Ex) but fundamentally that’s what you do in a first person shooter.
I don't really understand cannedfool when he says we need something new? Do you mean something that’s not a FPS? or an FPS that's not in first person, and you don't shoot things?
There are a sh*t load of games out there that cater for all this. If you don't like FPS's, don't play em. Me? I still love my fps's. Looking forward to finally playing doom 3 (it’s taking ages to download, if I don’t have it by Friday I’m swinging round to GouldFish's), Knights of the old republic 2 (still need to play 1 mind), and of course HL2.

I think the real difference in gameplay is between FPS single player and multiplayer... discuss:

still shooting people in first person, regardless if its a bot or you friends...and it's still a sh*t load of fun. The only dimensions you can really add are more interactivity, better goals, graphics, perhaps an rpg element. What I think makes an FPS a truly great game is the story line (for single player). It don't matter if it looks amazing, if all I do is run around to find a key to open the door and get "THE END" I'll look back and think "that sucks". (same applies to movies)
Oh and if we're splitting hairs here, you don’t move at all canned fool, the world actually moves around you.

i agree with pretty much everything that has been said, except womble's comment,
like it has been said the genre of fps cant really change, like deus ex you can have more depth and greater interaction from the game itself and from what i have see hl2 takes that level a whole lot further, but when it comes down to it, fps games involve running about killing whatever you find with a big gun, sword, or pretty much any other thing they can think to equip you with,
one way to get away form this is 3rd person perspectives but still it has the same concept, running around doing similar activities, look at games like baulders gate, which i loved playing, Star Wars GAlaxies has the option of seeing through eyes or top down, but swg is more about character development than simple fighting,
i think mojo summed it up best, its not like the idea changes but how involved you get in the game, if it just makes you run around and kill things then fair enough, but if you are involved enough and love the atmosphere and the interaction then you cant get that bored, i mean i have played cs for what, 3 years, i still enjoy the game, but thats more because of the people i play with than the game itself, look for something other than the concept
oh and did anyone else other than me play a game called eye of the beholder? that was kind of a fps game, but very old school,

the only problem with games like SWG is that it often takes soooooooooo log to get into the ga,e, eg richie is still probably killing nothing stonger than butterflies at the moment. The only other thing that I think is wrong with it is the mission system, theyre all essentially identical which therefore makes them rather boring.
The same COULD be said of CS however the number of connotations of CS rounds and gameplay make it more interesting. In CS literraly ANYTIHNG could happen, depending on who you're playing against any 2 rounds will never EVER be the same whereas you know with SWG youll go out, find the base, kill the 2-3 defenders, shoot the base once, kill the next 2 defenders, shoot the base again, kill the last defender then blow up the base, over and over, and on, and on, and on and ariston (old skool ads baby!)....
The real interest for me would be trading and flying ships etc however to get to that level of gameplay you ahve to go through about 6 months of killing butterflies...

wrong wrong and wrong , for a start you automatically say missions and killing , swg isnt just about that , and there are very very varied and diverse missions from entertainer missions were u have to perform "gigs" to bounty hunter missions which involve sending imperial searcher droids out then traveling to wAypoints in order to try and find your "bounty", then theres simply delivery missions for cash or indeed the destroy missions , theres quest were u have to search caves for items , then theres pvp player versus player, a hole new set of rules and different pvp moves and rules , then theres the crafting experiance making anything from dress slippers to wookie armour to guild halls and hospitals , theres surveying for resources theres image design for makeup , tattoo, hair design , theres creating foods via the chef profession to sell on a vendor , there politics , learning to set yup your own guild or town/city , you will soon be able to be a fighter pilot in your own space craft , you can be a smuggler who slices peoples weapons and armour for cash , theres creature handler ,were u learn to capture and tame wild creatures then train them and sell them on as pets or combat helpers. etc etc i could go on n on theres loads more you can do in SWG , ive not even mentioned the jedi prof which is yet another completly different ball game to normal play . Anyhu boring it aint , some parts can be a little samey but its so diverse you can simply do somat else while you have a break from grinding xp , go shopping visit the games Points Of Interest etc etc.
Faee did a trading prof in about a week with no shooting anything , she had her own shop with a little monetery help as i said before you dont have to stand there "shooting butterflies". you can shoot rabbits , meatlump baffoons , sharnaffs (well i can) gubbers (froglike things) snakes , dragons , lizards , jawas, tuskan raiders etc etc
SWG ROXS........

hmm... the point im making is that to get very far in the game you need to learn to shoot and to do that you basically have to shoot butterflies all day tho...

not so with a little knowlege you find out how to get help from people who will give u better weapons , tell you wot animals to shoot for the best xp points and wot planets to visit to find them on , i started a whole new combat proffession and in 2 days of not constant playing im half way done , because i asked the right questions and i know wot to shoot n were . You would always have a advantage over the lone nub who buys the game coz u know people like me and faee and richie and dagnar , so youll get all the help and advise you would need to speed thru any proffession u wanted to learn ive even got houses spare weapons galour etc etc , with a sliced weapon you can shoot meatlump baffoons which drop loot and money and thats lots better thanbutterflies as they respawn at the same pont , so u can gaibn xp while looting money and other gear which has just been improved so the loot drops are better quality , stuff u cansell to make money stuff that people will actually buy .
