I am assuming it ran out if power during installing updates , turn it on
and it says configuring 3/3 updates 0% complete then powers down and starts again with same thing, tried starting in safe mode same thing any ideas anyone?
Edit- it's the in laws , so not too much of a rush, won't be back here till next Sat I suspect.

Press F8 during start up, and you should see an option of 'Last known good configuration'
Try that first and let me know.
I have had this before, and eventually after many reboots it actually works its way through and completes.
I'll be around for another hour or 2 before going out for this evening - sorry if i don't get back to you again.

Do you get to the login screen at all? Or does it configure updates and then reboot without the option of loging in before doing the same again?
If you have the original disk and you have let it repeat this process a good number of times, i would suggest thinking about doing a system restore. This won't touch any documents, settings, or installed programs at all, but instead focus on restoring all essential Windows system files.
I'll give you a hand over the phone if you need? Gimme a PM and i'l send you me mob number.

no log in at all all we get is configuring updates 3/3 0% complete then it shuts down only to start the same process again...and again etc. ...they have no idea where the original disc is and they made no restore points...I think basically they are screwed lol I may know someone at work who has a disc

K - done some research in to this, and it does seem that the way out of this is to have a Windows Vista media disk and run a Windows system repair or system restore.
There is another method of renaming a file called pending.xml in the Windows system folder, but i wouldn't recommend this as you would be cutting the head off the problem rather than solving it (although dead - it will still be there). Besides which it will still need the Vista disk.
If you need a Windows Vista disk - I can post one to you if you like? You could use that to do a system repair. Is the OS 32 or 64 bit?
Let me know.
Cheers,

I'm really sorry that the disc didn't work Baz. To be honest with you, I have genuinely run out of ideas. I too have researched this happening to other computers in the past, and it sounds like people are getting as frustrated as yourself with the problem. There are a few places in Microsofts web-site that idicate this to be a problem with a few updates they have - and have released hotfixes for them, but hardly helpful when you can't log in to install them.
If this were me, and I had reached this stage, I would be taking out the hard-disc and attaching it to another computer, taking off the data from it - then rebuilding it before putting the data back on.
I'm really sorry I can't be of more help.
Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask me any more questions that you think I could answer to help you solve this.
