/me slaps demon and his linux ways.
If you get linux to successfully run on a laptop without having MAJOR difficulties getting hardware to work, then i will be VERY impressed.
/me sits back and watches the flamemaster Demon at work defending his baby penguin......

not at all - ive got loads of mates who run it on a lappy

imho use rh7.3 cos its the daddeh however u will prob gonna wanna go for the new 1 so go for redhat 9.0. I reckon tho that you should actually dual boot it - stick on windows 1st then linux 2nd so that the grub boot loader from linux works properly.

So to rephrase...
Linux wont work properly without having Windows on the lappy.

/me slaps Demon and his Linux ways.

not at all - im just sayin if it were my lappy id dual boot so u can use both for different functions... u could just put linux on and have no windows but then ud b without useful packages like ms office etc etc... my point still stands tho - go with redhat.

I could have SWORN you wrote above that
'Windows should be installed first so that Linux works properly'.

yeah, but what i meant was if u wanna dual boot the system u have to install windows first so that u can use the linux boot loader.

Redhat is probs a very good one to go with.

However

FreeBSD is good as well, the ports tree make installing appz to do a job very easy but its proper unix not linux. Currently here at work we've just found a new version of linux that is amazingly good. Gentoo linux rox tbh - its got the benifits of FreeBSD with its ports tree etc but the compatability and flexibility of linux, definiatly one to consider although it is a bit akward to go with and i would recomend haveing a second computer online at the same time so u can read the online docco to help install.

Harv - *nix runs supprisingly well on laptops. It struggles with some of the newest of new technology but as for MAJOR problems i've never seen any and we have a load of *nix laptop users here at work. i think its because in order to make laptops as feasable as possible most use standard chipsets and setups, theres no quirky configurations in general and its all in one solid unit not multiple addon AGP and PCI cards.

oh 4got

another plus with freeBSD is that its probably one of the best documented operating systems out there. and alot of good stuff telling u how to do the simple things like set up X, and use CD's are explained, as well as how to config networks and burn CDs
