Ok guys, i need a bit of help here:

I have a P4 Northwood 1.6 (or 1.8, cant remember) etc with 1 gig RAM, and a 6800 something or another (not a GT :( ).

It runs hl2, Doom3 fine and all that sh*t. I dont wanna try BF2, i think it would jerk a bit.

Anyway, I was just checkingn my finances and think I could possibly scrape together £300 before the lan for a quick bundle upgrade a la Komplett.co.uk. So here is what I was wondering...

firstly, I have always been a Pentium kind of bloke. I never really trusted the Athlon as i have thought that they were a little unstable for the most part. I think since a few years ago now that they are much much better, and I am really considering just getting one now. however, i still want to know if you guys think i should go for a Upgrade Kit AMD Athlon 64 3700+, nForce4 SLI, 1024MB or the intel Upgrade Kit Intel Pentium D 820 2.8GHz, I945P, 1024MB DDR2

You see my concern now is not really which one would be more stable, but more the fact about clockspeed vs bus speed all that sh*t. The athlon runs at 2.2GHz Socket 939 1 MB cash, but its a 64 bit processor and comes with PC3200 DDR-DIMM 1024MB (i heard the value can be a bit sh*tty).

However, the Pentium D 820 Socket LGA775, runs at 2.8GHz and has 2MB cash and is dualcore (not read too much into that at the mo) and comes with 1024MB TwinMOS DDR2 PC4300 (I think its the better RAM). I know intel are now doing the MAC processors, so they gotta be good, if not better than the athlon ones (tho i think athlon are now doing dual core, but they are $$$$).

So, at the end of the day, I wanna know which one do you guys think would give me the better frames? (and just ignore the pci express for now). The price difference between them is like £2

and do you think i could get 100-150 for my p4 1.6, mobo and 512 RAM on ebay or something?

well intel chips still suck alot compaired to AMD's.

AMD have faster mem access, better FSB tech and they are true 64. Also intels dual cores are not too good at the moment.

A quick look over at toms or the other good hardware sites will give you more details. but basically AMD > Intel.

I vote for amd but not for any specific reason than the intel chime pisses me off. Hope this helps!

Suitability In Practice: AMD Plainly For Gaming Fans

If you're looking for a high-performance system for 3D games, you could do no better than to go with the AMD system. In particular, it does not create problems in the SLI setup with the nForce4 SLI chipset. The extra performance produced by the increased frame rate makes itself noticeable above all in mainstream 3D games.

Buying Tips: AMD More Efficient

So what should you be buying if you're about to shell out a large sum of money for one of the top systems? In the business sector, an Intel system would be the better choice, especially considering the better availability and service offered by partners and solution providers. As far as power goes, Intel is an inefficient energy-guzzler with up to 30 percent more power consumption than the AMD system.

I guess thats my answer. (all from tomshardware)

Right,

I have decided on an amd 64 (probably 3700+ 2.2GHz Socket 939, 1MB). The thing is, the only mobos I can find which support AGP use DDR SDRAM. I know I can use my old systems PC3200 RAM, but would I able to use any DDR-DIMM , like PC4400 or would I have to find a better mobo? I tke it I would have to get a diff mobo if i wanted DDR2 right?

example mobo EPoX EP-9NDA3+, nForce3 Ultra,Socket-939 ATX, S-ATA, GbLAN, Firewire, DDR, AGP8X

Do you think the RAM I got is fine for now? if I save on the RAM, I could afford to finally get a SATA hdd. What ya think?

what about:

# CPU Integrated Dual Channel Memory Controller
# Four 184-pin DIMM sockets (Un-buffered Non-ECC DIMM)
# Supports Dual Channel DDR 400/333/266 (Max. 4GB)
# Supports 2 DIMM Single Channel DDR 400/333/266 (Max. 2GB)

It looks like I'd be better getting DDR 400 right? I was thinking about this mobo instead of the one from Komplett Abit AV8-3rd Eye Guru AGP (Socket 939) Motherboard

Would I be able to use my old "Crucial PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB CL3 5ns" RAM with both mobos and upgrade to better RAM later? or just the one from TEKHEADS?

Idealy I would like to not bother getting new ram, and going for the sata drive as I think it would probably give me the better speed increase.

um - if you get an SLI motherboard your AGP gfx card wont work... just to let you know.

Your old ram will work fine - ddr 400 is pc3200 - same thing!

Oh, and at that price your intel is probably not dual core - itll be hyperthreaded which is nothing like the same speed but the machine thinks it has 2 processors thats all...

Cheers D.

I knew the SLI was pci-express which is why I said to ignore it for now. Was not sure about the RAM but I guess its clear I should not bother with upgrading the ram and using the money for a SATA hdd.

Still not 100% about the mobo. Am stuck between getting the EPoX EP-9NDA3+ from Komplett or the Abit AV8-3rd Eye Guru from tekheads.

So far the EPox one is my first choice, as it will arrive with the cpu. Unless anyone disagrees, I think I'm going for the EPoX EP-9NDA3+, the Athlon 3700+ and a SATA hdd (just the one for now).

any objections?

we have an Epox board in the flat, it has 6 SATA ports on it. EPoX should be better then Abit.
