well - before rebuilding windows last night i thought id be a smart focker and do a steam backup. It took a while, but thats not surprising seeing as it compressed and then split 9Gb into 8 cds.. all went well and I got a nice wee dialog telling me that my backup had "completed successfully"! :)
Now, I've just run the restore and strangely (possibly unsurprisingly) its asking me for disk 9...

This is why it's good to have your games and apps on seperate partions, so when you rebuild windows you don't need to back up your games or reinstall any programs (apart from office)

I have always wondered about this.
There are various things that would go missing though.
Alot of things are kept in Docs and Settings along with things like shortcuts to the games on the desktop or start menu.
So you are saying you have to link everything again?
And also, the registry settings for the game are not stored in program files, so surley alot of games will need re-installing once re-built anyway.
Discuss.

i dont bother, i just have 1 partition on th game and when i rebuild i simply copy the save game files to my server. When you rebuild the OS and dont reinstall the games sometimes they wont work anyway cos theyre missing vital registry settings (eg sometimes things like your CD key held in the reg) which stop the game running anyway. I rebuilt last week and I simply copied my entire steamapps directory to another machine, rebuilt, installed the 200k steam client, then copied the steamapps folder back. All worked perfectly first time...

Hmm.. Dunno if thats quite right Gouldy. Works for some apps and older games, but for most theyll be screwed because all their registry entries etc are gone. Athough all it should take to repair them is an over-the-top install, which also will normally leave your savegames etc intact! :)
But actually, since when I first built this machine ive had 4 partitions over 2 disks..
Disk1 80GB SATA150
C: WIN2K (now WINXP) 40gb
D: APPS 40gb
Disk2 80GB SATA150
E: GAMES 40gb
F: FILES 40gb
Demon reckoned it was overkill but its very handy for..
1. Access times - by having windows and games on seperate physical disks, game load times are much faster.
2. Defragmenting - having all everything seperate cuts down on file fragmentation.
3. Rebuilds!
I've also just bought a 200gb IDE disk as well (where ill put all my install files and movies and sh*t) so now things look like this..
Disk0 80GB SATA150
C: WINXP 40gb
D: APPS 40gb
Disk1 80GB SATA150
E: GAMES 40gb
F: FILES 40gb
Disk2 200GB IDE
S: STORAGE 200gb
Hmm.. didnt really mean to write an essay here..
but if you are gonna have a format sometime - it's a good system to try!

Thats undisputed.
What i said was that shortcuts and desktop items were kept in docs and sets. They would be lost because although 'my docs' can be re-located, the start menu shortcuts can not.

What I do when I do a rebuild is back up all of my doc's and Email etc. then just format the windows drive.
So far I have a very short list of programs that will not work stright after a rebuild, the main one being office.
Most games will fill in registry enterys are you go along, and alot of registry enterys are crap anyway. Let me put it this way, I have not installed Steam in over 9 months and I think I've done atleast 2 rebuilds.

Um, they can, all you need to do is setup a roaming profile and put the path in to the users profile. Can be done on a local WS account as well as on a domain. Then you could in theory store your profile on the Data drive which is never going to be formatted...

I always wondered, how can you move your documents and settings folder? (don't need to do it now, but I was short on space before..)

Thats why I said you dont need a domain - you can map it for local computer accounts too...
Ross: copy and past this into a vbs script file (where Z is the mapped location for your new my docs location):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER = &H80000001 strComputer = "." Set objReg = GetObject("winmgmts:\\" & strComputer & "\root\default:StdRegProv") strKeyPath = "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" objReg.CreateKey HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath ValueName = "Personal" strValue = "Z:\" objReg.SetStringValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, ValueName, strValue
objReg.CreateKey HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath ValueName = "My Pictures" strValue = "Z:\My Pictures" objReg.SetStringValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, ValueName, strValue
objReg.CreateKey HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath ValueName = "My Music" strValue = "Z:\My Music" objReg.SetStringValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, ValueName, strValue
strKeyPath = "Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders"
objReg.CreateKey HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath ValueName = "Personal" strValue = "Z:\" objReg.SetStringValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, ValueName, strValue
objReg.CreateKey HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath ValueName = "My Pictures" strValue = "Z:\My Pictures" objReg.SetStringValue HKEY_CURRENT_USER, strKeyPath, ValueName, strValue

I don't mind having having my docs and everything on the C:\ drive, becuase it take about 10mins to back everything up.
