Well valve developed the scource engine (no sh*t) and HL2 came out of it, a brilliant game. Valve have also released (if they havnt will do very soon) HL:source but thats not a remap, its just the old maps recompiled in the source engine so you get some nice water effects, a bit of noticeable physics but thats about it. Valve also said it was up to the fans to remake the original game to full source/hl2 standards if they wanted to.

introducing Black Mesa : Source

Its only a link to the forums that are making the 'mod' but basically their aim is this, take the original game, remap the entire thing from scratch allowing bigger better areas (less loading intervalls perhaps?) improving the intro ride on the tram, general looks and areas to the original game (making the office area feel like an office area), having ragdoll physics (i beleive) etc etc, you get the idea, basically its the port people wanted valve to do, these guys are trying to do it

From what i gathered theyre looking to release first beta in the not so distant future

yeah they said from the start it was a demo of how easy it is to move your mods to the source engine.

I gave it ago, and you get the nice water and the rag doll on the models and thats about it.

no, it just improved water, and the crome effect is now done via the pixel shaders so it looks alittle better.

and I have applyed to the people making BM:S so be a mapper and a coder hope to hear from them soon :) .

no it's a case of going round every level getting screenies and people making plans of what the levels should look like.

I didn't know that HL:Source was so basic in change tbh...

So - fookin well played for any project that involves the public in creating a superlative version that improves ALL the aspects of HL.

Excuse the pessimism though...
Surely this project should be carried through the correct medium involving a structured approach co-ordinated by dedicated (and more importantly - PAID)project leaders, artists, designers, developers and programmers.
There is NO WAY they will get the material they need from just announcing this in a forum and relying on unpaid personel to just create this out of thin air.

I do not think this concept will go far.

I appreciate the intention, but not the conduct.

isnt that what they said about linux?

besides the paid people are not bothering with it, just recompiling the old stuff, and valve said it was upto the mod community to do it if they wish, thus these guys are, besides it was also communities like this that spawned CS, DOD, NS etc....

its worth giving it a go even if it is no good, i mean it is a free mod (has to be)

i KNEW you were gonna bring up Linux dude!

Linux is an alternative business tool that is designed to increase a businesses productivity and so therefore make them money. Therefore, businesses indirectly put money in to research and development for Linux through thier employees since many have found it to be a cheaper alternative than to pay the MS licence fees (ask me how expensive they are - i know).

You really think the people developing the Linux OS over the years weren't paid for it??

Dude, a project THIS size will never get completed when there is:
a) no money to be earned
b) no money to be made
c) no central organisation

Bubble is burst tbh!

the linux kernel was developed by a uni student who couldnt get most of the comertial stuff out there to work for him the way he wanted. the free software foundation developed compilers, and other bits, people then started using it as a home OS, then it went on servers which caused publicity that ment more people used it, then businesses in general use it. I agree redhat, SuSe, even mandrake are business driven, but slackware, gentoo and even FreeBSD i would argue otherwise. i will also concede that applications like open office etc are also business driven. my point though was that people said having a community approach to developing a peice of software would result in failure but it got on so well businesses did get involved which sped it up even more (people could code 40 hrs a week instead of only 5) but the community still contributes, codes, and designs new things. i think demon told me how someone at his uni wrte some USB drivers or something, and because they worked better that the current versions they were used in the next kernel. software like the mp3 players and movie players are all community designed and contributed, so what if a business database is primarly supported by say sun microsystems?

So what about my point about things like CS, DOD and NS? they were ALL community developed, like BM:S.... CS and DOD just became so big with the online community Valve eventually 'braught them out' - who's to say this wont happen with BM:S? besides its already half done for them, story line, map designs, plot ideas, engine and dev tools, its all there, they just gotta remap basically not develop a new game from scratch.

Anyway why are we arguing? we both think good on these guys for even giving it a go, and we both admit its a huge task, even if only a half decent version comes out it will be free soits not like its the end of the world if its not at valves standards

oh and good luck gouldy with getting on the team :)
